Few things sting like losing part of your security deposit to "cleaning fees." The good news: most deposit deductions for cleaning are completely avoidable with a thorough move-out clean. Here's a room-by-room checklist to leave the place spotless — and your wallet intact.
Kitchen
This is where landlords look hardest.
- Clean inside the oven, stovetop, and range hood
- Empty and wipe out the refrigerator and freezer
- Wipe inside and outside of all cabinets and drawers
- Scrub the sink and faucet; degrease the backsplash
- Clean inside the dishwasher and microwave
Bathrooms
- Scrub the toilet, tub, shower, and tile grout
- Clean mirrors, counters, and inside vanity cabinets
- Remove soap scum and hard-water buildup
- Wipe down exhaust fans and switch plates
Bedrooms and living areas
- Dust everything, including closet shelves and door frames
- Spot-clean walls and remove any wall anchors or nail holes (patch if your lease requires)
- Clean inside closets and along baseboards
- Vacuum carpets thoroughly; mop hard floors
Throughout the home
- Wipe down all baseboards, doors, and trim
- Clean window sills, tracks, and interior glass
- Dust light fixtures, vents, and ceiling fans
- Replace any burnt-out light bulbs
Don't forget the easy-to-miss spots
- Behind and under the refrigerator and stove
- Inside the washer/dryer area
- The top of the front door and the inside of the entry closet
- Patios, balconies, and garage floors
